FREEDOM
you can never be too happy. If you are, there always comes a time when you're down in the ditches and asking yourself how did you ever manage to reach here. So. this was obviously the first question Meera asked when she came out of the room that fateful day. This was not what she was expecting when she agreed to the whole charade.
It was just another day at the University. She was waiting at the gate for her friend to arrive. " This is it! I am not going to sacrifice missing lectures for Ami any more." A car screeched to halt in front of her and out climbed Amira. " I'm really sorry. I will never ask you to wait. Sam called me early morning and I got late."
" This is inexcusable. You know how angry Prof.Williams gets when we miss his lecture. How am I supposed to get maximum credits in Genetics if I don't attend his classes?"
"I know Meera. I get it. But, you need to stop acting so uptight about it. Let me fix you up with one of Sam's friends, please?"
"Another one of your hare-brained missions to get me into a loving relationship like your and Sam's? No, thank you. I'm better off the way I am. Besides, the last time I agreed to a double date with you and Sam, he brought that Ethan with him. I'm not agreeing to this again."
" I promise it'll be someone great this time. Plus, you still don't have a date for the Benefit . You have to bring someone."
" Then I'll just skip it. The only reason I was even attending it was for the felicitation. you can get it on my behalf since you're already going. Crisis averted!"
" No, I'm not going to do that. You will have to suck it up and get a date. And you don't even have to worry about it. I've already set it all up. Sam and Ishaan will come pick us up at 8 tomorrow."
" YOU DID WHAT?"
" I know you're angry now, but once you meet Ishaan, you'll love him. You both are perfect for each other. Please Meera, please?"
" Amira, this is the last time I'm ever agreeing to anything you plan. You will never, ever spring something like this on me, ever again. Do you understand? "
" Yes, I do. Now, stop hurting my hand. The only reason I'm promising is because I know this is going to be the last time I meddle. Ishaan is perfect for you and you will live happily ever after like me and Sam!"
" We'll see about it."
The fateful day arrived. The girls were getting ready at Amira's because Meera lived in a hostel. They were just applying the finishing touches on their outfits when the doorbell rang. "Oh, they're here!" chimed Amira. " I can hear that." Meera wasn't really enthused for tonight. She was just going through a mental flashback of all the times that Amira had arranged such elaborate dates for her only to burn down because she didn't like the guy. But she was about to be surprised.
Ishaan turned out to be a real gentleman. Before leaving for the Benefit, they were talking to each other in the living room and Meera found out that Ishaan was a Business Major in the university and was actually going off to London to intern for a huge firm. And, he could make intelligent conversation about anything under the sun. This was a pleasant surprise. Sam did not have friends so attuned to the real world. Meera was looking forward to the evening. She didn't have to go through it like a chore now, she was going to enjoy it.
They left in different cars. Throughout the ride, Ishaan paid attention to what she said, provided necessary comments when required. Even during the Benefit, when it was Meera's turn to take the stage and accept the award for the "Most Innovative Project in the University", Ishaan was quite excited. So, when Amira caught up with her during dinner, Meera wanted to tell her how happy she was. "I told you he was perfect for you!" " I have to concede that you were right. he is pretty great. We'll be leaving shortly after dinner. He wants to show me something." " Ok. Ask him to drop you off at my apartment." Meera was excited to see how the night would end.
As is the way of life, some things are always too good to be true. When they were finally alone, he thought it was perfectly fine for him to cop a feel and try to kiss Meera. Good thing she knew how to take care of herself. She never prided herself on presuming how a guy might be but she had never been this wrong. All that glitters is not gold had a new meaning for her today. She took a cab back from there to Amira's apartment and waited for her to come back.
All the waiting gave her time to think and make some decisions about what she wanted out of her life. She wanted to fall in love, but not because other wanted her to. She wanted someone who would want her for her, not for what she could give him. And she finally decided that she would put her foot down when it came to Amira's meddling. She loved her to death, but this was her life and she deserved the Freedom that was given to her. She was free to choose who she wanted and free to make her own mistakes and learn from them. Ishaan was a learning curve for her, and she had learnt her lesson.
